How long does CeMAP take? Realistic study timelines

Ask five people how long CeMAP takes and you'll get answers from 'a few weeks' to 'over a year' — and all of them can be true. The honest version: an intensive fast-track can be done in weeks; studying around a full-time job, most people land somewhere between six months and a year for all five units. Your registration window sets the outer limit: 18 months if you register for all three modules together, or 12 months per module if you register for them individually.

Hours, not months

Months are a misleading unit — what matters is study hours. There's no official per-unit figure worth treating as gospel, but as a planning shape: the regulation units (FRE1 and FRE2) tend to take the longest because the material is broad and unfamiliar; the mortgage units (MRT1 and MRT2) go faster if you're already in the industry and slower if you're not; and CeMAP 3 needs little new content but plenty of practice time, because it tests application rather than recall. Whatever your total, weight it towards practice rather than reading — the last third of your hours on each unit should be mock papers, not the manual.

Fast-track vs around a job

• Fast-track: full-time study or an intensive course can get you through the regulation units in a couple of weeks each and the whole qualification in one to three months. It works, but only if you can genuinely clear your diary — the pace leaves no room for a bad week.
• Around a full-time job: 6–10 hours a week is sustainable for most people. At that rate, expect roughly 6–8 weeks per unit and 6–12 months end to end, depending on how life cooperates.
• Career changers with no industry background should budget towards the top of every range — the terminology alone takes time to bed in.

The registration window

Register for all three modules together and you get 18 months. Register module by module and it's 12 months per module. Registration for the full qualification is £735 and includes your learning materials and your first attempt at each unit; resits are £120 a unit after that. The clock starts when you register, not when you start studying, so don't register months before you'll realistically open a book — you're burning your window.

The bit that actually makes people slow

There is no longer any exam to book. Since Pearson VUE delivery ended on 12 January 2026, CeMAP is sat online through the Brightspace virtual learning environment under remote invigilation — you register, pay, get access within about 24 hours, and sit each unit whenever you decide you're ready. Nothing on a calendar is waiting for you, and nobody will chase you.

That's the real failure mode now. Under the old model a booked test-centre slot did half the motivational work; that scaffolding is gone, and the deadline is entirely self-imposed. So impose one properly: write a target date for each unit in your calendar at the start, tell someone what it is, and treat 'consistently over 70% on timed mocks' as the trigger to sit rather than a feeling of readiness that may never quite arrive.

A realistic week-by-week shape

• Weeks 1–3: work through the FRE1 material, finishing each topic with practice questions rather than moving straight on.
• Week 4: full timed FRE1 mocks, review every explanation, sit the exam. Start FRE2 the same week — the material overlaps enough that momentum helps.
• Weeks 5–7: FRE2, same pattern. Then a short breather.
• Weeks 8–14: MRT1 then MRT2. MRT1 is the big one — 50 questions covering law and the application process — so give it the larger share.
• Weeks 15–18: CeMAP 3. Mostly practice: full six-case-study papers against the two-hour clock, not re-reading.

Sit each unit as soon as your mock scores are trending over 70%, and start the next one the same week. The single biggest cause of CeMAP taking 'over a year' is the gap between units, not the studying itself.
